It Is Finished
It Is Finished (One of The 7 Last Words of Christ)
“So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.” -John 19:30 NKJV
Jesus says the words “It is finished.” What is it? In the Garden of Eden, sin entered into the world. Now what should have happened is that should have been the end. The wages of sin is death. We should have never had another chance again. But God in His grace and mercy put a plan in place to handle it.
John 3:16 is a constant reminder of this plan. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. The “it” was a plan that was put in place for me. For you. For each and every one of us.
God’s plan was for His Son Jesus to take our place. A perfect man. An innocent man. One who knows no wrong is taking the place for my sins. He is my substitute. He understands the weight of what He is doing.
Just the night before we find Jesus praying for another way for this plan to come to fruition. Father, if you are willing, let this cup pass. Not my will, but your will be done.
When Jesus declared, “It is finished,” He wasn’t just referring to His suffering ending. He was proclaiming that the work He came to do—living a sinless life, bearing our guilt, satisfying the justice of God—was completely fulfilled. There was nothing more to add. Nothing left undone. He had carried out every requirement the Father had placed upon Him for our salvation.
He paid the full penalty for sin—not just for some, not partially, but completely for all who believe in Him. This means that if Jesus paid for your sins, God will never, ever demand that payment from you again. Justice has already been satisfied. To try and pay for your own sins now would be to deny the sufficiency of Christ’s sacrifice.
Have you ever felt like you have to “make it up to God” when you mess up? Maybe you try harder, pray more, or beat yourself up emotionally, thinking that will earn you back into God’s favor. But here’s the truth: Jesus already paid the price. Your debt is not only forgiven—it’s finished. There’s nothing you can add to it.
This doesn’t mean we take sin lightly. But it does mean we stop living in guilt and shame. We confess, repent, and walk forward in freedom—because the cross took care of the penalty. You don’t need to strive to be “good enough” anymore. You need only to rest in the finished work of Christ
