How it all started...
In August 1959, a few adults and children came up with the idea to start a Church. One of the women, the late Maggie B. Davis asked Rev. W.S. Brooks if he would be willing to pastor the Church if it came to be. He agreed and they came up with the name Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.
Sis. Maggie Davis was given the title of “Church Mother†which she held until her passing on to glory in September of the year 2000.
We rented a building which was previously a dentist office on San Patricio Ave. and due to continued increase in rent, we moved to another building on Bee St. In July 1960 we purchased a lot with three buildings on it, in one of which we held our worship services.

The Early Years...

The following year in April, the members laid the foundation for our first real church on South St., in which the members themselves built and Bro. Oscar McDaniels built the steeple. Across from the church was an onion shed and railroad tracks. The smell of onions and the sound of the train did not keep us from worshiping the Lord. For the next five years by the grace of God Mt. Pisgah remained at that location withstanding the test of times and even the winds and rain from hurricane Carla.
On February 6, 1966 we purchased this current building from the Baptist Mission Church thru the Kingdom Building Foundation. During the pastorate of Rev. Brooks, he ordained two ministers; the late Rev. Ernest Shields and Rev. Henry Earl Young. In addition, 14 deacons were ordained. Rev. Brooks’ tenure of twenty one years as Pastor of Mt. Pisgah ended in September 1980.

The Journey Continues...
The Rev. Henry Earl Young accepted the call to pastor in October of 1980. Under his ministry we built the fellowship hall and purchased the PA system. During this time “The Harmonettes†came to be.
In March 1983, Rev. Gary Roberts accepted the call as Pastor. Although his time here at Mt. Pisgah was the shortest, the number in attendance was greater. During this time the “Gospel Harmonizers†were organized.

Continued Growth...

The following year in March 1984, Rev. Claude Axel began his tenure as Pastor. Under his ministry, the remodeling of the church building continued with the addition of the vestibule, the adding on of the clerk’s office, the reconstruction of the pastor’s study, the purchasing of the pews, new carpet and pulpit furniture. The church van was also paid off. The fellowship hall was named the “W.S. Brooks Fellowship Hall†in honor of the late Rev. Brooks. Also under the ministry of Pastor Axel, the Youth Ministry was reorganized, one deacon was ordained who later became one of Pastor Axels’ spiritual son’s in the faith: Rev. Riddley Rich Jr.
God Continued to Bless...
In October 1991, Rev, Riddley Rich Jr. accepted the call as Pastor of Mt. Pisgah where he faithfully served for over 5 years. We continued remodeling the church building with the paneling of the walls. We also purchased choir robes.
Rev. Norris D. Jackson accepted the call as Pastor in January 1997. Under His leadership the membership and church attendance continued to increase. We purchased another van and central air unit. During his ministry, Rev. Jackson honored the late Sis. Geneva Edmonds, the oldest living chartered member with the title of “Church Motherâ€. He also ordained 3 deacons who are still currently serving here at Mt. Pisgah. Rev. Jacksons’ pastorate at Mt. Pisgah ended after sixteen and a half years.

Where we are headed...

In August of 2014, Rev. Albert L. Walker answered the call to pastor Mt. Pisgah. Under his ministry, we have changed our ladies lounge into a nursery allowing children to be introduced to the things of God while parents are able to worship as well. Our PA system has been upgraded. The sanctuary has been upgraded and more is to come. Ministries have been established and are flourishing such as the Food Ministry and the Worship Arts Ministry. Mt. Pisgah’s social media accounts and website now has live streaming of Sunday morning worship services.
We have one charter member still living, Sis. Mona Davidson, who was the youngest at the time.
Mt. Pisgah continues to grow spiritually , as is our motto, “Growing From The Inside Out.†Our mission exists to help fulfill the Great Commandment and Great Commission by loving God, loving the person you are, and loving people around you. We strive to tell the story of Jesus Christ as our Savior to everyone we come in contact with.
Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church simply exists for the purpose of honoring Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.
