April 27, 2024: I Will Make Someone Else Better While I’m Getting Better

As iron sharpens iron,
So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend. -Proverbs 27:17 NKJV

Antonio Pierce is the current head football coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. This past season he served as the interim head coach and constantly made the declaration “Let’s get better today.” This thought process not only applied to his players. It included him as a coach as well. He has hired two former NFL coaches on his staff to help him grow as a first time head coach. As he helps his players grow, these former coaches are influencing him. Being perfectly aware and of who he is as a coach, he doesn’t want to stay stagnant. He wants to get better.

Our mindset has to be one in which we constantly strive to get better. As iron sharpens iron, that’s the only way it gets sharper. They have to intentionally rub against each other in a way to make it sharper. What are we doing to make each other better? How are we intentionally coming together to make everything around us better? Solomon gives us a reminder that you can make those around you better. And if you want to get better, intentionally seek those who can make you better. Don’t just expect it to happen by chance.

The way that we know that iron needs to be sharpened is that when it is time for it to used for its purpose, it doesn’t effectively do what it was created to do. Don’t wait until you are ineffective to get sharpened. Do it every chance you get.
