2nd Day of Christmas

“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” -Isaiah‬ ‭9‬:‭6‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

A while back, there was a movie created called Space Jam. In this movie, the Looney Tunes find themselves in a situation that they are outmatched by the Monstars to play a basketball game. In a sense of desperation, they have one last hope that would bring them victory. Michael Jordan.

At just the announcement of his name, the Tune Squad has hope that they can win the game. Even though they don’t have it all together just yet, knowing that one of the greatest basketball players of all time provides hope. Not only is he on their team, but he shows them how to win the game.

Isaiah 9:6 gives us some hope in the midst of some not so bright situations. Before these words, it seemed like we had no hope. There was destruction, invasions, sinful way of life. It wasn’t looking good. But the words “For unto us a child is born, Unto us a Son is given” changes things. A future is promised in the midst of darkness. A ray of hope is given in the future announcement of Jesus Christ. Even though it would be nearly 800 years before His arrival, this Son would do some things that would provide hope.

The government would be on His shoulders. Jesus would have the royal authority. That’s hope because other lands are taking them captive. Jesus would have complete control. He would be our Wonderful Counselor. That’s hope in that He one who’s indescribable in His character. Not only that, He will lead and guide us in the way to go in life. As Israel’s Mighty God, the Messiah will be a brave and powerful leader ruling over the armies of God like no other king before Him. He will be the divine hero and champion defender. As the Everlasting Father, the Messiah will be a father, and His fatherhood will be without end. There is hope in having a good, good, father. He is the Prince of Peace. There is hope in understanding the deeper, more foundational meaning of peace is “the spiritual harmony brought about by an individual’s restoration with God.”

We have a hope in understanding these names of Jesus the Messiah are not just names. They are what He is coming to do. When it seems as all is lost, hold on to the hope in Jesus Christ.
