April 1, 2024: I Will Seek God’s Wisdom In All I Do
”The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction.“ -Proverbs 1:7 NKJV
At the beginning of my teaching career, I had a table in the back of the classroom with two chairs next to it. On this particular day, one of my behavioral intervention students thought it would be a good idea to put these chairs together and take a nap in class. One crucial piece that I haven’t mentioned in this story yet is that these chairs had wheels on them.
As I see him making his move, I warn him. “Hey man, I don’t think that is a good idea. I have seen how this plays out.”
He responds, “I will be alright.”
About 10 minutes later as I am writing on the board, I heard a squeak and a loud thud. After refusing to listen to the warning, the student fell out of the chair and hit his head on the floor.
Solomon writes the book of Proverbs to share wisdom, instruction, insight and direction to help a generation understand the importance of wisdom. As he starts out this book, there is an essential element that one must have in order to start on this journey of knowledge and wisdom. There must be a healthy reverence for God and how awesome He is. Understanding who God is and what He means to our lives is part of an important foundation in our faith walk. If we do this, we would do well.
On the flip side, not doing this puts us in the position of a fool. God is the creator of this entire universe, but there are moments in our lives that we neglect His guidance and do our own thing. Any time we find ourselves neglecting excellent guidance regarding ourselves, we are the fool. My student heard the warning, but yet continued on his own path that led injury and embarrassment. It could have went a different way if he wouldn’t have rejected the guidance that was given to him. Don’t be the fool. God is too awesome for us not to listen to what He has to say about our lives.
