That's Not Normal

But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. -Luke 1:13 NIV

On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.” They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.” Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child.  He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.” -Luke 1:59-63 NIV

John the Baptist was chosen before birth to be set apart for a divine reason. The tradition was that the child’s name was a representation of the family heritage given by the father.  However, before John was even in his mother’s womb, an angel shut the mouth of  his father, Zacharias so that he could not talk. After John was born, the people wanted to name him after his father, Zacharias, but his mother spoke up announcing his name to be John. The people around them questioned them because this name broke tradition. Zacharias confirmed the name by writing it on paper and the people were astonished.  
 
People will often question what breaks the pattern of what they know to be normal/ tradition. We serve a God that is not normal nor traditional. He is greater than we can imagine. God continues to show how He cannot be kept in the box of our limited understanding by doing things different from the norm. When He changes things, He is showing us that His power, love, grace, and sovereignty is limitless. God desires to use us daily to show forth His limitless sovereignty. So today, let your prayer be, Lord use me to show the world how Great you are even when it contradicts tradition.

Remember, at first, they may question but later they will be astonished.
