Remember...
and Joshua said to them: “Cross over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of the Jordan, and each one of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, that this may be a sign among you when your children ask in time to come, saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’ Then you shall answer them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. And these stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.” -Joshua 4:5-7 NKJV
Growing up, we used to take field trips in school. For every field trip, my mom would get me a Kodak disposable camera. Some of you might remember taking the picture and turning the dial to be able to take another one. These pictures would serve as memories of the field trip and the people who helped create them. There are times even now, that I can go look at the scrapbook and reflect on the memories.
While you may not be able to take a picture of every moment of your life, there is some memory of something that triggers you to remember that moment. 2020 was a year that some would like to forget. It was a time of trouble, sickness, death, and uneasiness in more ways than one. Yes, there may have been some unpleasant moments. But if you are paying attention, God still blessed even when we did not deserve it.
When Joshua was told to place the stones, they were to serve as memorials of what God has done. That when people saw the stones, there would be a generation that was not present for what God had done. There would be an opportunity to share the testimony about what God had done for them in their lives to give them the hope that God will see you through. It was not just a reminder of what God can do; it will be a source of strength for you. There will be a reminder of what God is still able to do.
As you begin life in 2021, I am sure that there are some memorials that were established in 2020 that will give you strength for many years to come. Each one of us have experienced God in moments that have left an everlasting impact on your lives. What are your memorials? Are you ready to share the story? Just remember, God is not done setting up memorials in your life.
